Mt. Kennedy
Mt. Kennedy is a very beautiful and popular peak in the Northern Chin State. It is near the town of Tiddim, the Falam District of Chin State of Myanmar. It is about 8,868 ft above sea level and is the second highest peak in the Chin State.
The peak is about half a mile from the Kalay-Tiddim Road. The peak is pretty high. It is windy all year round. The wind is very cold in the winter time. There are not many trees on the top of the peak. Some big trees were cut down in the past for cultivation corn and potato. Therefore deforestation and soil erosion became a huge problem around the mountain. Today it is like a grassland. Therefore some interest groups started planting the local beautiful trees such as cherry and pine trees. Some rhododendron trees are around Mt. Kennedy.
From the peak one can see Kalaymyo and Kalay valley in the east and Falam township in the south and Tiddim town in the west. Mizoram can be seen in the west when the whether is clear.
The people of Tiddim set up the wooden Christian cross on the top of Mt. Kennedy in the past. It was destroyed by the military government when they took power in 1988. The Buddhist monks built the pagoda on the top of the mountain by the support of the military government.
Mt. Kennedy was a strategic location and was the scene of a battle during World War II between the Japanese and British forces. The two fought back and forth for many months around this strategic location. One can see many old tank body around Mt. Kennedy until today. Some old iron bars of Japanese tanks are still laid near the Kalay-Tiddim Road.
Mt. Kennedy is one of a tourist attractions in Myanmar. It is a good place for hiking and is a perfect place for adventure. The peak can be reached by motor cycle or small car. October-November and March-May is the best time to visit Mt. Kennedy.
